Her Royal Highness's Annual Yuletide Musical Celebration Spotlights Unsung Heroes
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Yuletide celebration at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have supported their local areas.
The large audience will hear a blend of carols, music and readings from actors such as Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.
Focusing on Kindness and Compassion
The central message of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.
In the audience are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a message before the carol service.
Carefully Paced Reappearance
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own steady comeback to public life following her health challenges and treatment, in November making her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".
Music and Opportunity
Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from young musicians aided by the Future Talent organisation, established in part by the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for music lessons.
Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the organisation, with grants helping towards musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be performing at the concert.
"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to hone their artistic talents.
A Sisterly Duo
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.
Attending the service will be representatives of different generations.
That will feature nine-year-old Saphia Turner, honouree of a prize for youthful altruism, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to generate funds for community pantries.
Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts
The Abbey has been adorned with custom-created holiday decorations, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the perfect culmination."
This annual carol service will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
