Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had come out of the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the edge of outer space.
The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from different industries.
The venture behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
